"Did You Know?" 8/12/2011

Every Friday, I'll be posting a "Did you know?" blog entry that lists at least 3 things I learned the past week that are new to me.

Did you know that...
  • A pineapple is actually a type of berry!  The article here says: The pineapple “fruit” is not really a fruit at all but is a mass of individual berries fused to the central stalk.  Thank you, anonymous poster at MLIA, for that bit of fruity trivia.

  • In South America ("It's like America, but south!"), there is a huge chain of tabletop mountains called tepui plateaus.  One of the most majestic peaks here is Mt. Roraima.

  • Who hasn't tried to self-diagnose themselves using Dr. Google?  At least do it right using WebMD.com's Symptom Checker :)

After entering your gender and age, the tool asks you to click on an image of the human body where you're experiencing the symptoms. The image is facing front by default, but you can flip it if your problem is on the back. After selecting the problem area, you will get a list of symptoms that are usually associated with that part of the body. Most of the symptoms that you might select will bring out popups that ask specific questions like, when did you start getting the symptoms, are they're aggravated by certain activities, etc. It's almost exactly like a checkup except it's free :-) Once you're done picking out a list of symptoms, you'll see a shortlist of the ailments that match your symptoms.

It is a convenient and organized way to figure out what's bothering you. But, take what you find out with a grain of salt.   In the end, it's still best to just go see your doctor ;-)
