My kids' yaya, Rochelle, asked me if she could get a month's pay in advance. Naturally, I asked why, because she never asks just for any reason, and this is only the 3rd time she did this in the 2+ years she's been with us. Well, I wish I hadn't asked in the first place.
Rochelle said that her father (let's call him "Papa") got into a serious issue, about one of his farmhands who was killed on their farm in Lanao. Apparently, the farmhand (let's call him "Boy") held a grudge against Papa, for reprimanding him one day for being so drunk that he forgot to feed the "alaga" (I don't know if those were cows, pigs or chickens).
On the fateful night, there was a small gathering at Papa's place. Papa and Mama had already gone to bed as it was getting late, but Papa's friend (let's call him "MF", you'll see why in a bit) and Boy were still outside, drinking the night away. Boy told MF that he was going to kill Papa, so MF got a knife and killed Boy.
MF escaped, so Papa went to the police and reported the crime the next day. Apparently, MF is a "Murder Fugitive", because he had previously killed another man, who was actually Rochelle's godfather. To top it off, MF killed her godfather also on Papa's farm. How he escaped the first time, and why he came back again, and why people around him (including Rochelle's family) didn't report him to the authorities is a mystery to me, as I'm sure it is to you now. Probably because they were afraid he might come back for their throats next? Sweeney Todd pala eh...
Anyway, so the reason why Rochelle needed the pay advance was because her father, being a responsible employer, paid for Boy's funeral, which put Rochelle's family back probably a few months on their household budget.
