It's "Dress Up Week" at my kids' school. They have one every year. I am so green with envy! Going to school in costume, and it's not even Halloween! Or United Nations week.
(Sidenote: This is the first blog post I've made here in 2 years! Been microblogging on Facebook and Twitter, which has not curbed my talkativeness, unfortunately, and so here we are again.)
So, "Dress Up Week". This time, they have a theme for each day this week. All the themes are really cute. Hip socks, wacky hair, pajama party (Yes, pajamas! It's so fluffy, I want to die) -- stuff like that. But we put most of our efforts into Wednesday's theme: "What I want to be when I grow up".
I already know what my 8-year old, Keoni, wants to be (an architect; "I'm going to build a city."). He is very serious about it. But when I turned to my 5-year old, Ninja, I naturally expected a blank stare. So we had a heart-to-heart talk, just so I can plan my costume-shopping list properly:
Me: Ninja, what do you want to be when you grow up?
Ninja: Uh...Batman?
-- LOL --
Me (considering it for a moment; the costume is gonna be easy peasy after all): Are you sure?
Ninja: Aaahhh...no no no no...I'm just joking. How about...soldier?
Me: Really?
Ninja: Or, uh, ninja?
Me: Oh-kaaayy...Ninja dressed up as a ninja...
Ninja: Or soldier. Soldier na lang :D
When I told my husband, expecting him to laugh about the soldier thing, I was surprised to find a slight frown on his face. Of all people, I didn't expect Jazz to take Ninja seriously. But I've tossed the thought around in my head a few times now, I do understand where Jazz is coming from and yet, my heart is at peace.
Coz by now, when it comes to my kids and their dreams, I am sure of 3 things:
1 - I believe that there are dreams and desires in our hearts that were planted by God.
2 - When God has a plan, He Himself will see it through.
3 - All of God's plans for us are good and perfect (Jeremiah 29:11).
On one hand, I want to support my kids. But on the other hand, I don't want to take them seriously yet. Coz, come on, they're 5 and 8. Who knows what they'll fancy 3 months from now?
